That’s amazing…
Spoke too soon, RIAA.
What type of printer?
That was always a crazy statement: anyone would download a car in a second if they could.
I wonder how the automobile industry will hamper progress this time when their turn comes. They probably won’t have 3D models of their car (why would they), so anything we could print off will have to be open sourced anyway. Unless someone comes up with a 3D scanner to complete the set.
Can u print a 3d rendition of tesla car?
Not sure about the safety of the vehicle then again in looking at a lot of old cars they were not particularly safe in any event.
@V_D11 – there are some simply amazing low-ish cost 3d scanners coming onto the market right now. Generally they require you have extensive physical access to the model, like you put it on a turntable and spin it while illuminating it with a laser and taking pictures, but there are newer ones that show promise that only require the person to take a fairly large number of pictures from different angles.
@John_Bump The future is exciting.
I love this story.
@V_D11 @John_Bump I just scanned in and printed some things with a Kinect this weekend. You are right about the future.
I think 3d printing could be used to improve the motor industry, cars made of repeatable patterns and ultra fast improvements and adaptations and not just new styling from the same sets of designers.
For a little bit of perspective, it’s going to cost him somewhere close to $2225 worth of filament to print every piece.
@michelle_mendez check it out
Did someone say Affordable Handheld 3d Scanner?
Takes “auto theft” to a whole new level, just need a phone-cam!
And start grabbing random cars right off the road…
…with the unsuspecting oblivious driver still inside.
Someday, I’m going to steal Angkor,
and use it as a temple for a Warhammer lizardmen army!
Carmen Sandiego, eat your hart out!!!
So cheap prototyping then as the current method is hardly cheap.
How about a 3-D hot blonde ready to go?
Depends; What do you consider cheap, @L1111 ?
I believe some of those links I’ve provided, are in the dumpster diving range…
…and DIY on a shoestring budget, certainly doesn’t mean shoddy.
William Mims - I’m talking about large car manufacturers budgets which I have been connected to in the past. My own personal budgets for a project are more next to nothing.
