Clocks…
Very nice, well done
It runs on a custom designed pcb with rtc and atmega328. Two buttons to set the time and 3 pot’s to set the color for the clockhands. A LDR keeps track of the surrounding light and sets the various brightness levels. The casing is made from MDF with veneer and lexan. I make them for friends and family. I get invited for every birthday party!
Well the quality looks excellent and everything you have just said makes them sound very professional, you should definitely be selling them.
I might be having a birthday party soon, wanna come
Whahaha
Thanks!
I sold a few to be honest, just to get some money (mainly the cost for pcb manufacturing) back. They are all handmade and it takes about 2 days. I’m very much into detail and perfection… Also the veneer is rather expensive, especially coromandel.
Looks beautiful. I’m curious how do you apply and work with the veneer. Do you lasercut it and then glue it to the MDF?
I built a CNC-machine myself. That I use for cutting the MDF bodies and lexan rings. Fijnhout Amsterdam is my favourite place to go shopping! They have all these kinds of exclusive veneer. It takes about two days to make one of these clocks. There’s 6 models now, using 8 kinds of different veneer. I handcut the veneer and glue in onto the MDF. I made molds to fix the pieces. It’s all about visual. Therefor the right dimmingcurve is important. It’s me I guess, but everything on these clocks is near to perfect. I’ll upload some more pix in the future
Nice it looks really perfect indeed.
Why do you use the more expensive Lexan over Acrylic?
I tested a lot from http://kunststofshop.nl AC2 (opal 38%) and AC41 (doube satin) give for me the most interesting results (although both have a different look and feel).
Some plastics are not as white as they look. You live around the corner from kunststofshop.nl…
Well, from the perspective of Amsterdam I live around the corner. For me it’s still 1 hour driving. Compared with 1,5 hours that I need to get to Amsterdam that’s not so around the corner
I’d love to see a video? Do they animate as nicely as they are built? - amusing that I too chose the same colours for my hour, min and sec hands
I added some more pix to the album.
…and a video! The colors can easily be changed with the pots. I prefer blue seconds, red minutes and green hours. Don’t know why…
Thanks for the tip on Kunststofshop! I will be needing some (largeish, oddly shaped) pieces of lexan/acrylic diffusing material for a project soon :-). That stuff is expensive!
(Also, Dutch FastLED meet up soon? You know there’s a Dutch Burning Man Decompression happening in November? It’d be great if you guys had any LED art pieces you might like to display: https://www.facebook.com/events/633775713381227/)
I’m pretty busy around that time, but maybe another time I can check it out. Kunststofshop does laser cutting/milling as well I think. I think they have equipment that supports larger workareas (most Fablab lasercutters in Holland are limited to 60cm by 30cm (or 42cm)
…just added 20something more pix. enjoy…
