What colour was the the underlying plastic? Probably not important if you gave it two coats of “brass”. I’ve experimented with finishing bronzefill and I think the finishing techniques there, and with resin cast pieces, may also apply to this coating technique. Fine wire wool very good for burnishing high points, then apply dark or black shoe polish to the crevices with an old tooth brush, then polish off with a clean rag! Gives darker aged tarnished look. Clear lacquer to seal. A bit more time consuming but worth experimenting with also.

Actually, use the metallic waxes used for metallizing picture frames. They look real good.
