HA! did I say I was done with upgrades on my printrbot simple metal, well guess again because this time its OcuPi. I’m sure some of you guys have this running your printer and mat be going right now, but I just wanted your feedback on it. it will cost a low sum of around $120 to get all the necessary pieces (Raspberry Pi 2, wifi dongle, micro sim, etc.) is it worth it? will me being able to remotely access my printer and monitor my prints be all that helpful. it sounds like a great use but I’m not so sure, what do you guys think
I have a pi2 and wasn’t impressed with the speed using Raspbian Linux on it, it was very slow. Never used it with Octoprint. But If I was to get a new Pi, I would get the latest model Pi 3 model b, Not the Pi 2. Its faster, has wifi etc https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-3-model-b/
Yeah, no reason to get a Pi 2 anymore, especially since the Pi 3 has integrated WiFi.
@Jeff_Dewe oh that’s right I forgot they had the newer version out and it came with integrated Wi-Fi. but have you used the pi with ocupi?
I paid 35$ for my pi3, used an old USB adapter and microsd card. Printed out a case.
In all I only spent 35$
$120 not worth it, but having the pi and untethered printing is awesome.
@Stephanie_A well if I get the pi3 then ya it would be cheaper, but that price was aslo including the monitor camera so I could get a live feed. do you know of anyone who has set up really clear instructions on setting ocupi for the printrbot and all the connections and what not?
@Matthew_Del_Rosso No haven’t tried it with anything else other than Raspian and puppy linux. Neither was fast enough out of the box, Probably would be good for 3D printings, Its the size of the distro’s used that is a killer on the Pi 2, But for a smaller specific non bloated tasks like a 3d printer server I could see it being useful.
@Matthew_Del_Rosso maybe something like this http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-Raspberry-Pi-3-Model-B-3-5-Inch-Raspberry-LCD-TFT-Acrylic-Case-Heat-sinks/32652195366.html?spm=2114.10010108.1000014.10.DZN3Ut&scm=1007.13338.33346.0&pvid=61d24d7a-62e5-4668-bfaa-9f0b03fb5f7e&tpp=1 <-- add a power supply, a camera and bob’s your uncle.
@Jeff_Dewe thanks it even come with a integrated lcd that would help allot when running ocuPi thanks for the help.
yes its a pretty cool looking setup-combo, It says its a real raspberry pi 3, But you never know? You could get the authentic pi and just by the case + LCD for $15 http://www.aliexpress.com/item/3-5-Inch-Raspberry-LCD-TFT-Touch-Screen-Display-Acrylic-Case-Diy-kit-Stylus-For/32649617872.html?spm=2114.12010108.1000023.10.H5pqMs
Use repetier server and forward port 3344… It’s an amazing software. Can be setup on your laptop or an old pc or a pi. I’ve used them all and settled on an old pc
