Has anyone ever tried an e-ink display on a printer?
What would be the benefit?
I haven’t seen it. I don’t think firmware user interfaces would go well with e-ink. I would avoid it for the poor responsiveness and the screen flip blanking is annoying.
@ThantiK I would consider the above as spam
For the record, I removed the spammy comment and banned the author after a look at their profile revealed nothing but the same spam.
Thanks alot @foosel
@Jeff_DeMaagd I would say it looks darn cool having an e-ink display. Are they lagging more than the standard LCD’s?
Have you even looked at an eink display change its display content? Last I’d seen, they are very slow compared to LCDs. LCDs change instantaneously. eink has to blank out for half a second by going black, then white then write the new content. It’s only good for static images. Changing numbers or changing menu highlights on a readout is no good.
Doesn’t look too slow to me.
OK that is a little different but that means having artifacts from previously displayed items. Not super terrible but I still feel like e-ink isn’t a good fit on a 3d printer.
Doesn’t look toi slow…
what will be the benefit?
Actually none except of good looking and making it work. I think some things don’t always need a benefit.
Personally I’d go with a PanelDue. That’s the thing to beat in my opinion. Full color touch screen.
really?
Agreed, Jeff. I use the PanelDue and am really happy with it. Responsive, clear and easy to install.
@Jared_Eldredge unless you test that
I have to disagree, maybe I’m totally wrong, but I’m pretty sure the America’s cup boats, at least some, had e-ink displays, and they looked phenomenal compared to the boats with LCDs for their readouts. E-ink can be very quick, you’re thinking of older stuff. The benefits are low power, don’t really care, and high contrast and readability. I don’t think many 3D printers have a ton of activity on their screen, it seems like a perfect fit.
@Rob_Nance Low power consumption is only considerable on portable devices (maybe a tinyboy like printer - would be a great project!) but it is sure a benefit along with high contrast and readability. I have a laydrop prusa i3 berlin at work (1st gen) and the LCD is lagging due to wear.
The only activity (at least on Marlin) is the fan animation, the read out for the axis, the flow control (when changed) and the progress bar. So it should work out very well to imement e-ink on a printer.
