Has anyone here been able to successfully print removable supports with slic3r? Mine seem to fuse with the print making removal impossible. Ive been having to sand the last layer of support off because it just wont come off at all
I had them tuned amazingly well once, but this was a few years ago, just before their big rewrite of the support code. I have yet to get usable results out of the new algorithm. If I really need supports, I either design them into the model or use either MatterControl or S3D to slice. Iāve had much better luck with their algorithms,
Cant afford S3D but how good are the supports on matter control? I used it once to calibrate my extruder it seemed to be very useful. Just never actually sliced anything with it lol
I donāt think S3D is worth the money anyway. I just figured I should have a copy for comparison purposes.
Iāve gotten some really smooth bottom surfaces using breakaway supports in MatterControl.
Cura does supports pretty well most of the time too.
Any special settings you set? Or any tips you wanna give someone who has never used matter control to slice anything before?
I mean the supports that come with the skull that comes on the Prusa SD card are a dream to remove
Personally I think S3D is well worth the money if you print a lot. The supports and other features make it faster and cleaner than other slicers like cuts and Slic3r. That being said, adjust your air gap between the supports in your slicer. Should result in less of a bond.
I dont even know what setting to change for that im still really new at this lol
I suggest to check out Cura 2.5 which has a very nice interfacing layer for supports.
Have a look at this
i use the prusa mod version of slic3r. you have to hand it to those guys. theyāve really upped slic3rās game - though there are still loads of areas to improve (supports being the main one).
iāve battled itās support settings for a while and could never get them just right until i figured out one of the biggest UI flaws. thereās an editable dropdown menu item for the gap between support layers and object layers.
once you set that correctly - you should have no problems.
for reference - i`m attaching a screenshot of my support settings for PLA. these have given me relatively easy to detach supports with a very clean finish for the supported layer.
instead of me going over each one of them and how exactly it affects the print it might be better for you to ask specific questions if you have them. or just try changing their values and see how they affect your slic3d printā¦
p.s the editable dropdown menu i was referring to is the one circled in red in the screenshot. choose detachable and then click again on the box itself to change the distance value, you will definitely have to experiment with that value for different materials.
Thanx!
Well i printed the tree from with supports and they seemed to come off easily. Almost perfect surface finish but there was a few blemishes from the supports. Ill keep tuning it in and test printing but you guys have helped me out a whole bunch already! Thanx!
