Has one actually ever used NEMA11 steppers for moving the z-axis/extruding? I think they should geht geared up if I want to use them as an extruder right? With ratio would you recommend?
Hyrel uses them for all axis and the extruder motors overheat, starting and stopping when they get too hot, creating nightmarish prints. My personal experience below. All copies of the same gcode file, printed sequentially.

@Adam_Steinmark too bad, wie have two fabricator minis at work and they make decent prints though. Only exception is the NEMA17 for the bowden.
Never got a geared nema 11 to work on my printer as a direct drive motor for 3 mm filament. I use a geared nema 17 and it never failed me.
@Daniel_Stauffer Well the XYZ on the Hyrel seems to be fine even though it is a larger machine with significantly heavier moving mass. I never printed faster than ~40 mm/s though.
I don’t know why anyone would use Nema 11 for Z though since you need longer steppers for Nema 11 vs a Nema 17 with the same torque.
