Having pla issues… Tried from 200-220 and the extruder doesnt like to extrude it

Have you calibrated your extruder?

Not sure how to…

Tom has lots of really good tutorials.

It seems more of a temp/material issue

200C is close to the highest temp I’d ever use for PLA. 185C is the “standard” starting point.
You may be getting some heat creeping up the path. It doesn’t take much heat to soften the PLA and make it clog above the nozzle.

The tempa for it from the maker is 200-220

It depends on a lot of factors. Mine prints great at 195C and a bed temp of 60C. No other sticky stuff required. The temp really depends on the manufacturer and how pure the PLA is. I have heard of some people printing as high as 205C with PLA. Try going up in 5C increments, then down in 5C increments… you will hit a sweet spot.

Who makes the pla that is an issue?

Makerbot. I have cheapo brands that actually work but the higher end stuff doesnt

Often the problem is insufficient cooling of the cold part of the hot end. Extruders designed for ABS allow heat to creep up the extruder, softening the PLA before it reaches the real melt zone. Adding a strategic fan at the top end sometimes helps.

I have a fan on there pointed at the very top of the hotend

How long will it print for?

@Abc_Def
Without knowing the type of extruder, the only general advice I can give is that the fan, optimally, should cool everything above the heater block (not just the very top).

Sometimes not even 1 layer

Print my pla on printrbot simple metal for hours at 210. No problem. try around and see what works for you.

I have the inland brand that always works. High end stuff doesn’t like my printer

Happy to give you a sample of my PLA if you want to test it out. Seems to “cure” a lot of Makerbot problems anyway

What brand of pla is it?

Mine http://diamondage.co.nz made from Ingeo-certified PLA granules with no crap in it
