Hello group, I'm new to the group and to the cnc community.

Hello group,

I’m new to the group and to the cnc community. I was wondering if anyone out there has any experience/advice about the r7 using vectric software and the tinyg controller. Is this a good setup or is there a better choice? I’ve been a woodworker for 35+ years and am looking to broaden my experience in the shop. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I use Aspire with the R7. It really comes down to the controller you use. I have several Arduino based controllers I use so I haven’t set up the TinyG. The Vectric software is a design software and will NOT directly control your machine. You use your design software to design your part and create the tool paths/gcode. Then you use a separate control program such as chilipeppr or Universal gcode sender to send the gcode to the machine.

Thanks Curtis.

Hi there Jerry,

I have heard good things about vertic but use fusion 360. Fusion 360 is easy to use and is a powerful modeling program. It’s also free. This is no small thing as most programs with modeling and CAD capabilities like F360 cost well over $1,000. Also, as a person fairly well acquainted with various modeling software, I can say that F360 is incredible concerning its modeling and CAM features. It took me about 3 months to get the hang of the machine but that’s because I can only use it on weekends. Definitely read up on the synthetos website. After you figure this machine out its really awesome. Also, invest in limit switches to avoid crashes into the ends of the axes. If you do end up using fusion 360 join their community as they will help you with any problem using a screencast.

Thank you Kevin, that’s good info. I haven’t purchased anything yet including the R7. I’m trying to get all my ducks in a row before I dive in.
