Hello,
i want to share the rather deep look i took at the 3d scanned Nefertiti, i think you’ve read about it, it’s almost everywhere.

I disagree about calling it a total hoax. Don’t forget that the main goal is no to show that you’re able to perform such 3d scans but to talk about art in the public domain and the issue Egypt requesting the return of it to their country.

It’s guerrilla art and these things always come with some questions marks. Enjoy the tech details but don’t forget the global message.

Not only is the resolution claimed not possible with a kinect (and especially in the way presented), but it’s not doable via simple photogrametry either. You would need a calibrated stereoscopic rig and a lot of shots.

The only way to do this realistically and practically would be via patterned light scanning. And walking around a museum with a DLP projector, camera and a laptop wouldn’t fly very well.

Excellent article, BTW.

@Ante_Vukorepa Thank you for the feedback in both comments.

@Ante_Vukorepa a combination of photogrammetry and malicious sculpting could get the resolution… But again it isn’t as Sexy and a smuggled kinect

@Camerin_hahn True. But. You could probably get the resolution just by sculpting the whole thing in Zbrush
But that’s hardly a scan, then.

@Camerin_hahn And yeah, bottom line is, it doesn’t sound nearly as “cool and edgy” then.
