Hello smart people!

I’ve recently discovered FastLED and am planning a Midi controller project with a teensy at it’s core.

I’ve run into a few problems and despite days and days (and nights) of staring at the various examples (including those fantastic demos from Andrew Tuline) and reading the wiki. I just can’t get it.
What I want to do is set up two neopixel rings and two neopixel sticks so they sort of look like a reel to reel. When the play button is pressed I’m looking for a 3 or 4 led cylon type effect in green with a background of dim green. The same for pressing record (except in red).
It sounds simple enough but I just can’t successfully hack any of the examples I’ve found to produce this.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial or something?

Thanks in advance

To be clear, I’m ok with the midi side of this project, it’s just getting the neopixels to do as i imagine…

@Stephen_Higgins try this: https://plus.google.com/112916219338292742137/posts/2VYNQgD38Pw

Do you want the cylon effect to go around the first ring, down the two sticks, and around the other ring?

What have you been able to get working so far? Can you post your code to pastebin?

Are the pixel rings and sticks wired together as one continuous strip, or each wired separately? (Depending how they are wired up and the orintation of the first/last pixel on the rings could make some of the code more or less easy.)

@Jon_Burroughs Thanks! That’s pretty much exactly the effect I’m looking for! I’ll try and get it working off a button press later.
In terms of adding a bg colour, what’s the best way to go about it? Is there a way of selecting (within the loop) all the pixels that aren’t lit?

@marmil I’m happy for the effect to stay within the bounds of each ring or stick, as long as they al move at the same time and speed etc.
In terms of the circuit, the two rings are connected to one pin and the sticks have individual pins. Whilst the ‘play’ effect isn’t running I’ll want one of the sticks to serve as an indicator. So I kinda thought this would be the best way to hook them up?

@Stephen_Higgins The best way to advance animation ideas, is by sharing code. It gives the people a chance to see where you are at, spot issues, and add their ideas to the code. What say you? Pastebin?
