Help!
I’ve built this lamp using 50 ping pong balls, ESP8266 and WS2801 and 5050 LEDs. I love the look but I can’t figure out good usages for it.
I’ve tried scrolling text but the “pixel density” is not enough.

That’s very cool, and I happen to have 50 ping pong balls in the workshop…
Really neat looking build! Looks like it would make an amazing hanging ceiling lamp.
I would love to see an animation of one or two streaky balls (the cylon effect with a long tail) going around the ball. Like one or two electrons zooming around a nucleus. I think the angle could be changed over time too.
You could also show weather status, traffic updates, etc. Or something like a missed call indicator.
I could totally hang that in a creative suite! Even better, make about 3 more, make 1 more this size and two more bigger, setup some patterns and then put some pictures and videos up and I bet you could sell it to a creative type company for $500 or more. Would look great in a conference room or edit suite or something. Cool work!
What is the center “ball” made of?
Just ship it to me. lol
How did you organize the leds inside the ball? Are they chained in a spiral?
@Jeremy_Spencer do it! They make great diffusers!
@Dushyant_Ahuja Yes and yes! I have planned to add weather animations. Rain and snow might look very cool.
I also want to add remaining minutes until the next metro/bus, but I haven’t thought of a good way to indicate this.
@Erik_Rosengren I will one day, but I’m really behind on my Christmas Stars at the moment, then I’ve got loads of other orders too…
@Trey_Coursey Thank you.
The center ball is a separable 180 mm diameter clear plastic pall that I have spray painted white on the inside.
@Franck_Marcotte Good question! All LED locations are generated using a Fibonacci lattice. I already had a 5m LED string so after making the holes I just glued the LEDs in whatever hole. Then I just had to map each position to the right LED index
@marmil Will try that!
@Erik_Rosengren Looks fantastic
@Erik_Rosengren I have created a weather lamp. Code here: https://github.com/dushyantahuja/Wave-Lamp-with-weather
However, am planning to modify based on the following library: https://github.com/squix78/esp8266-weather-station
@Dushyant_Ahuja That looks freaking nice
@Dushyant_Ahuja very nice!
Video?
How are the wave shapes made?
Your repo looks empty to me
@Erik_Rosengren I wasn’t going to mention that. lol
@Erik_Rosengren Problems with github - I had forgotten that I need push the changes from my desktop. It’s up now
@Erik_Rosengren The waves are 3D printed.
