Here is a large scale installation that extensively uses FastLED library to control about 1000 12v LEDs on the front “rooster” and about 500 ws2812bs (strips cut to proper length and interconnected) on the step panels. Really nice installation. The interactive hop scotch is great too.

Wow! Not what I was imagining from your initial post. Incredible! The rooster would be amazing even without the LEDs… but obviously LEDs make everything better. Might have to rig up a hop scotch mat like that for my little ones

@Maciej_Dudek ​ was there an overall controller? Or is this multiple free running sections/panels?

I used two Arduino Megas - one controlled the Rooster LEDs and the other the hopscotch panel.
