Here’s a useful article if you’re on the fence about buying a filament extruder, as it highlights some of the factors necessary to help you make the decision.

only if the diameter is more accurate and stable than what you buy…

Uppermost on my mind is the reliability and quality of the filament produced by home extruders, but this issue was not addressed by the article.

If the machine could reliably produce the same quality as the filament that I currently buy, then a home extruder would be hard to resist.

it is very expensive anyway. If there is no guarantee for good quality, it is not worth the price anyway.

And as for pellets: you do not need that if you recycle botched prints. You just need something to shred them.

ok I did not know this. I am new to this stuff. Anyway I will stick to buying filament as I like to keep things simple for now.

Quality issues aside, would this be a good solution if you use small quantities of many colours of filament. I would imagine it is easier to store many small pots of pellets vs. a large number of spools of filament.

Well i did some research, and i can buy 25kg of PLA type: ‘Ingeo 4043D’ pellets at a local reseller (resinex) for €3,5/kg tax and shipping included.
And buy the exact same PLA on a 1kg spool, shipped to my front door for €36/kg.
