Hex-Box d218|17

made this simple segmented cover/lid with box (7 parts). The ability to have a changing orifice gives a lot of applications. As the lid is always connected to the box there is nothing to loose, hold or lay aside . I am thinking of adding a thread instead of the box so it could be used on a honey jar where you can leave the “spoon” in.
The segments have a little groove on the side so there is no gap between the elements.
When closed the dovetail openings on the side also get locked - so they are sealed too.
(you can motorize this if adding cogs on the dovetails and 6 small gears driven by a big ring gear or belt around the assembly)

As usual you can download the STLs for free from my Page here: https://sites.google.com/site/ulrichbaer/tdi/tech/hexbox

Sure. And I’m talking to other mods as well to decide if we should explicitly make http://v.gd an exception.

Btw, the only reason I noticed this post is because it was in the spam category which means users (not moderators) marked it as spam.

http://v.gd still offers “statistics”. Unfortunately that automatically means that we cannot simply make an exception for them. The entire point of getting rid of URL shorteners isn’t the fact that they shorten, but because they also have the ability to track. If you’re interested in how much traffic is coming from here, then you’re not interested in the community itself or contributing to it, you’re actually more interested in how the community can benefit YOU. We don’t want that. We don’t want those kinds of people.

You’re more than welcome to post the full unshortened, un-analytic URL – there is no post length restrictions in G+. We WANT people to see your stuff, if you wanna share it. I like that http://v.gd is “ethical”, and like some of the stuff they do…but without a way to ensure that they do NOT do analytics of any type, I can’t say they’re an exception.

I removed the bickering comments just because I felt like it detracted from your work. It’s an awesome box!

@ThantiK I was suprised when i heard that it was marked as “spam” - so it seems that only the addition of an url can change the perception of a post from “nice” into “spam”. So i do understand that these short url confuse some user - hence shouldn’t be used.
But If a G+ post linked to a G-site than you have total surveillance. I have not activated G-analytics on my page because i don’t want to track users but google will use that data anyway.

  • a while ago you had statistics by google as default on every picture (visits) but they removed that feature. And to be honest feedback is motivating me, when i see that people from 20 countries have visited (showed interest in my work) then this is proof to me how wonderfull internet and sharing knowledge is. (https://v.gd/graph.php?url=ubaer&type=country) As this is anonymous channeled through a 3rd party i am ok with it in opposite of G-analytics. But the main reason is that i haven’t registered a domain and http://v.gd/ubaer is easy to type and remember … however i’ll not use this here anymore. And Thx for the compliment about the box!

So, on topic… it would appear you don’t have grooves and tracks for the pieces, that would really improve the performance I’d think.

@Rob_Nance can you please elaborate this a bit further? The segments have interlocking grooves so there is no gap between segments and the segments are guided with dovetails for the translation.

here without the segments:

That’s fine, I’m talking about the edges of the lid, it doesn’t appear there is a groove on the left or ride side for them to slide with each other. If you put a tongue on the right side, and a groove on the left, the action would hopefully clean up some.

EDIT: I just re-read your original post and it sounds like they are there, but the video shows them clearly struggling to stay together, so perhaps some tweaking is needed there?

as the segments are only 2mm there is not much space for guides. With thicker segments you can have them deeper. The box in the video uses an alpha design where the dovetails are not long enough to ensure stability when open. Also it could look like that there is a gap due to the shadow as the segments are very tight and have a slight pressure — but i can ensure you there is no gap.

You can see the groove here. If i lower the angle of the groove to make it deeper, you get overhangs that can’t be printed without support - So the only way would be to make the segments thicker.
