Hey all,
Has anyone got any idea what’s happening here?
Just found my printer had stopped feeding and the lower layers were really thin and stringy. It wasn’t sticking to the bed either but the first layer of the raft looked normal.
I’ve printed the same gcode file 3 times with this new filament and once with another guy, but I’m not sure why but my last 2 prints have been like this.
Cheers for any advice,
Drew
PS, still pretty new at this…
What printer do you have?? Looks like a flow error and you could not have your z height correct.
Maybe a warp issue - especially if it’s happening on long thin parts. If it’s not happening on small parts, you have your answer. Warp brings the far edges up and catches the extruder, then skips the X/y and all heck breaks loose.

Sorry guys, totally forgot to mention the printer, it’s a Prusa i3.
The object is 501035mm.
@Griffin_Paquette , what’s the best way to test for a flow error? Just run the extruder for a bit to see if it runs correctly?
I’ll print something small tonight after work and see what happens @Brook_Drumm .
Thanks for the help guys,
Drew
The whole print, all the way to the bottom, looks like it has pretty serious underextrusion going on. I would guess you have a clogged or partially clogged nozzle and that has ultimately resulted in drive gear grinding through your filament to the point where it can’t get any grip at all.
Check your extruder and see if it has chewed a divot into the filament, if it hasn’t (or even if it has and you’ve pulled your filament out and cut out the chewed up section) try extruding into open air. Does the extruded filament come out straight, or does it curl? If it curls, you’ve got a blocked nozzle and should try a cold-pull to clear it.
Thanks @Stephen_Baird , I’ll try that tonight after work. Good to know about the curl, I didn’t know that. Is it the same for PLA as ABS?
Yep, every material should extrude straight, if it doesn’t there’s something in/near the nozzle altering the flow which means a clog or partial clog.
I had that problem when I first switched to MakerGeeks PLA and it required 230c. Once I got the temp high enough everything worked great. The first layers seemed to go down okay on a heated bed, but then it starts to fall apart. I wonder if the thermistor is still working like it should. Lift your head up off the build plate and disengage your extruder. Push the filament with your fingers and see how well it comes out the nozzle. That should help point out where the problem might be.
