Hey all,
I got a problem on my own build core xy(tbh there are a few, but my biggest for now;))!

When I’m printing it looks like xy are performing great, dimensions fitting, no sine error…however I have some problems concerning the extruder: it looks it is skipping steps since it seems doing a pause randomly. I use a mk8 Bowden extruder! Please take a look at the picture and tell me your thoughts! I tried to go for higher extruder temperatures(pla) but it didn’t change anything! I also installed a fan on to ramps ascend drv driver! I don’t use micro stepping for the extruder!

Thank you very much!

And as soon as the extruder motor is rotating everything’s just working fine. Did I miss any settings in Slicer? However I took a look into G-Code file and there the extruder is changed with every step.

If your extruder is skipping steps, you should check that:

  • the filament tension is tight enough (is there a screw to tighten on your extruder?)
  • the driver is adjusted appropriately (too much or not enough voltage can make the motor skip)

To check that your extruder is pulling the filament with enough force, you can command it to extrude manually something like 10cm (while hotend hot) and try to pull the filament as it advances. With a good extruder it’s almost impossible to stop the filament from being pulled. With a badly configured one, the motor will skip or grind the filament.

Thank you very much for your fast answer. It looks like I just found my mistake…

I switched to 1/16 microstepping that yields to enough steps per mm in configuration that the extruder will be continously moved…Foolish me :smiley:

But thank you anyways!!!

Ok you should also check that extruding 10cm is actually pulling 10cm of filament :slight_smile:

@Nathan_Walkner Except if he’s using 3mm :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I use 1.75 mm and this was more or less the only setting I found in Slicer for the filament and extruder :wink:

However, microstepping helped, finished my first 1.5 h print.

Now I only need to improve my Z-Bed. But that’s what I’m printing right now :smiley:

Really love 3D Printing!!

Thank you guys!

Have fun!
