Hey all. I’m thinking of getting an inexpensive 3d printer to start off. I’ve been looking @ the DaVinci Junior, and even as far up as their Pro version which works with more materials. Should I just start with the inexpensive version. I’ll be modeling characters, and possibly molding and casting them, or just painting those hero pieces. I am willing to model in parts if necessary.
Any ideas?

I’ve heard of a lot of grief with the daVinci machines. I think there are better options. Printrbot for one.

Kewl. Thanks Jeff. I did read the biggest complaint being the z-offset that setting it to a higher mm makes all the difference.
I also know unless you get the higher models($$$), that you are limited and restricted to using their PLA or ABS, depending on what models you get. They do now offer a PRO version that is open source.

I was extremely unimpressed with the Davinci when I saw one. I would go with a printrbot play as a first printer. They’re $399 new or $299 for a refurb/ding and dent.

What size details are you expecting to print? Generally FDM printers aren’t capable of very thin details like swords and guns of 50mm models.

I’m loving a @Creality_3D CR-7 printer I bought as a new kit sub $200

I’ve not run it at quite the speed of my friends $500 Printrbot but results have been comparable and occasionally better… He’s added a hotbed upgrade that steels an edge on some occasions.

However, what can be achieved by either is a consideration of your setup to print any given model - orientation, fill, shell, support.I think @David_McGuigan make a good point on fine / very fine detail.

Oh, I missed the figures line. You probably want to go to some kind of resin system rather than fused filament. Look into LittleRP.
