Hey @Andre_Roy , I don’t know if you’ll remember me, I was trying to clone your openswift and use a tape covering method, I’m still working on it, but I hit a few bumps, the first one learning how to fly a wing, as I had only flown multis. I built an FTVersa (something smashable ;P) and I’ll try to fly mine when I get used to wings.
The main bump I hit was that the wing is to wobbly at its ending points, I’ll try to redesign it for extra transversal rigidity, maybe I’ll add an extra spar or something (any tips?). I’ll upload my progress to github, and pull requests as I advance in my design.
Just FYI.
Just cover it in balsa. That’s where the rigidity comes from. Why not? Skinning with balsa is an easy skill to pick up.
Yes…I should try balsa… At least to get started.
But I really want to do tape, I think is lighter and cheaper.
Meh. To get lighter, the frame parts need to be thinned. I over designed it; it is my first time designing a 3d printed frame.
@Andre_Roy . I have a really big printer I designed… 2’ cube… I have been experimenting with single wall vase mode prints using a 1mm tip at .5 later height. These are the strongest things I have ever printed. Even PLA comes out so bendable and durable it’s astonishing. Brian is making some toy battle tanks for his kids and started printing with the 1mm tip… So unbelievably strong.
That said, I really think the strength is there for a completely hollow wing. With the right shape, or clever file splitting, I am confident I could print a flying wing in two parts and extremely fast.
It would be quite heavy until I find the happy medium between strength and weight but maybe a beefy motor and battery would make it worth while as a proof of concept.
I mentioned it was fast, right
Regards
Brook
Would I need a special extruder or could I just replace the nozzle on one of my Go Large’s heads? A larger nozzle would do real well at printing this style of construction too.
Larger nozzle is all you need. We got to 80mn/sec with 1mm tip at .5… Needs lots of cooling but later adhesion is mind blowing
Nice, I might pick up a larger nozzle from your website shortly. Wants…
