Hey community! Just wanted to let you guys know that we've got a contest

Hey community!

Just wanted to let you guys know that we’ve got a contest going on: we’re looking for the best low-poly designs! Original, unique, functional, you name it. We’re also giving away three 3D printers as prizes for the contest. Whether you’re a seasoned designer, or if you’ve always wanted to try your hand at 3D design, you may want to check this out!

Pre-approved post, Pinshape contacted the moderators prior to posting to make sure it was OK. Pinning it for 24 hrs.

Too many non low poly objects in the voting list.

@Mike_DiMare We decided to make it easy for people to enter the contest when uploading a design by offering a checkbox for them to automatically enter their design into a certain contest. Unfortunately, it means a lot of designers click the checkbox without checking the contest.

Rest assured that those designs that don’t qualify won’t make it through to the judging stage! Thanks for pointing this out :slight_smile:

@Pinshape Yep, I figured. Since it is a social voting contest, it makes the filtering and review of actual low poly prints an issue for the Voter (not much fun). I’ll gladly vote, but would prefer not to sift through tons of extraneous objects (usability nightmare); would an admin scrub of that list (daily or weekly) be feasible?

I hate for actual low poly content to be buried because of “greedy” designers who wan’t their prints on the “frontpage” of that list.

@Mike_DiMare Thanks for your suggestions! I actually was going through designs to remove them from the contest if they didn’t actually fall into the low poly category, but it was very tedious. I’ll look into seeing if I can go back to doing this :slight_smile: I mentioned to the team that we should probably remove the whole “clicking a button to join contest” thing, and we’re leaning towards making it so designers have to specifically enter separately.

One thing to clarify though is that although community members can “vote” to show their support for a design, the actual judging is done by 3 judges. We don’t do “vote” to win because we don’t want it to be a popularity contest— we used to do that in the past and realize amazing designs were losing the contests just because they lacked votes and didn’t gain traction in terms of likes. Now there’s judging criterion and a points system allocated to different aspects of what’s being judged. The community votes don’t carry weight on which design wins.

I can see how it would be deterring for community members to check out the page and have their input on the actual low-poly designs though if they’d have to sift through the designs on their own. Will think on this!

@Pinshape Thanks for the clarifications and discussion. agreed on many points (popularity contest and cleanup issues). Its tough to balance ease of use and stopping inappropriate submissions with minimal administration, good luck.

I’ll keep an eye on the contest! Thanks again.

@Mike_DiMare Not a problem :slight_smile:
