Hey guys, I’m wiring up a J-Head hotend(with a power resistor) to a RAMPS board… what kind of wires do you use?

I’ve checked online and they seem to sell by 10FT and I need only like 2-3 FT?

aw come on, for the heater - any wire thicker than UTP will do. There is not much of a need to use any special heat-resistant cabling other than on the first 10-20 centimetres next to the heater. The rest can be plain multistrand wire, 1 mm2 or thicker…
Thermistor can be wired with anything at all including UTP strands :slight_smile:
But remember - don’t solder, crimp. Soldered connections will come loose, sooner or later.

@Igor_Larine hey thanks for your input. My previous hotends all had the wires included… So I never thought to much about them other than the insulation felt thicker. What does UTP stand for?

@Minuk_Choi
UTP == Unshielded Twisted Pair. Common source is Ethernet cabling.

@Carlton_Dodd Ah, thanks for the clarification… actually, my main source for the wires have been from a CAT5 Ethernet cable where the locking tabs broke off… so this bit of info is really helpful!

@Minuk_Choi : Yeah, it seems we all have a few of those in our salvage boxes. :wink:
