Hey guys on average how long would it take to print something the size of an iPhone 4 case? In good resolution.

1-2 hours.

Depends on the definition of “good”, I just fabbed one last week on my MakerBot Replicator Dual (1st Gen) at 0.1mm layer height with 2 shells, ABS, Sailfish FW and 100mm/s accelerated print in <35 minutes.

I suspect that Cura prints may be faster than Slic3r prints. I hear that people using fans might be able to print faster too. My Raspberry Pi’s case bottom took about 1h15m last night at 50mm/s when sliced on Cura.

Would it be commercially viable to 3D print cell phone accessories?

For mass production injection molding is far cheaper than 3D printing, but if you deal in small volumes it might be a gap solution.

Thanks Shachar, somehow I was thinking the same thing. I’m considering setting up a business doing 3D printing but the viability of 3D printing is questionable unless you produce novelty items for a specific market, in small quantities and a high cost. As you rightly said, injection molding is the better way to go if I’m thinking about mass production…I have to do some more thinking as I think 3D printing will be a big area going forward and would like to get involved now…

Another iPhone case?
