Hey guys, so I set up octoprint with my printer but have a problem.

Hey guys, so I set up octoprint with my printer but have a problem. I need to access the printer from my school but really don’t want to check my Pi’s IP address each morning. The first thing that probably came to your head is DNS, and if that’s what you were going to say (be honest xD) please tell me which service you use. I have been trying all day to get No-Ip to work but they will not send me a confirmation email so I cant set it up. Is there another service I could use??? thanks

I’m interested on this

Does your ISP IP change that often ?

@Andre_Courchesne1 it changed twice in 4 or 5 days

Can’t you ask your ISP to give you a fixed IP?

You tried this how-to ? http://blog.mivia.dk/free-dynamic-dns-for-raspberry-pi/

I use the Telegram plugin. Not full functionality but good enough.

@Ariel_Yahni_UniKpty im sure they can for an addintional price:joy::joy:

dyndns – they even have a script floating around somewhere you can install on the pi under a cron job to refresh it on boot and keep the dynamic host ip up to date. Edit: Crap, nevermind – they aren’t free anymore.

https://www.noip.com/free probably works just as well.

You could also tunnel the service out from the Pi with a service like http://Pagekite.com or http://ngrok.com, which means a lot less configuration.

I use http://afraid.org. You can use a cron job to update your ip at whatever interval you want. I have been using it for a few years now and it’s been flawless. http://afraid.org

+1 for http://afraid.org. They don’t do any shady stuff like some others. Also they have a huge selection of top level domains.

Am confused why the email confirmation from noip isn’t getting through? It’s not in your spam folder is it?

@Mr_Bonce its very weird. They didnt say they sent it all they did was redirect me to the signin page, but when I enter my login and password it says “there is no account associated with that email and password”. So I looked online for help and saw that other ppl have been having this problem as well. I did check the spam and tried multiple email adresses. They posted a link in the support used to resend the email, but that link doesnt work either, all it does is buffer until I refresh the page then re-asks for my email

@Matthew_Del_Rosso Oh that’s pretty annoying!
I personally use No-IP, have done for years, not for any particular reason except that’s who I started using as soon as DynDNS started charging for basic use.

I definitely think you want something along these lines though, really does sound like it’ll be a perfect fix (as long as it’s free) as if you start doing more complicated things in your network it will expand with you, but if you don’t need it anymore you can just let it quietly expire.

@Mr_Bonce ya, I hope I can get it to work. Ill contact support today to see if they can help

Well as Cristoph and Guy suggest, there’s also http://afraid.org, haven’t used it myself but that’s what always got me about DynDNS moving to a paid model, what’s actually happening is very trivial which is why it’s usually free.

Quick question, how do I find the external ip of my PI? apparently the 192… one is only internal. Also how do I keep http://afraid.org updated with my pi’s IP as it changes?

@Matthew_Del_Rosso run one of the scripts the have listed to determine that. There are a number of ways to find it. It is probably the IP address of your router’s wan interface.

@Guy_Bailey oops ya you are right, I didn’t realize they all shared the same external ip
