In theory shouldn’t be very difficult.

with only one feeding extruder and one Bowden it is no problem, on the Marlin side (or just wire it parallel)
still try to finde out how it could work with severeral bowdens…

if all you want to is change the filament then you just need a additional servo which can flip the filament ( .https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1643906 ) . This setup would work but coordinating between the bowden and the direct drive will be a nightmare

This is an interesting concept, not working with more than 2 firmaments but the idea is great…

Question: can marlin move two extruder steppers at once? I assume it can. If so, you only have to do so during the period of time that the direct drive extruder needs to get a hold of the filament being pushed. Once it grabs, the Bowden pushing the filament should stop sending current so it can be dragged by the direct drive. This increases the drag on direct drive but would probably work.

A hack would be to leave all motors engaged but run the Bowden tubes at minimal current so the direct drive pulling (at higher current) can always overcome the holding force of the weaker Bowden steppers. This would negate the need for turning off current to any motors or the need to mechanically disengage and steppers w additional serves. Disengaging drives mechanically introduce another set of failure possibilities and variables needing to be controlled.

We just need to figure out how to hand the baton to the direct drive upon each filament change. This should be doable, but may affect the purge tower since the variables of retraction length and purge length may increase to ensure a comfortable padding… the trade off may be an increase in of overall print time.

running two extruders at two drivers is as simple as pointing the
ENABLE, STEP an DIRECTION pins to different Drivers. or wiring two steppers paralell like in Z-axis. so for a Hardware test setup one could just use the second extruder port. change FW and go!
for the dual setup im quite shure it is possible but one step after the other. Proof of concept…

@Georg_Mill I just dont have a Direct Drive extruder. and printing one just for a proof of concept … thougt s.o. might have it laying around

@Brook_Drumm the idea with the Current is good. i´ll keep that.
