Hi@all,
after reading for a while and playing around with FastLED I thought I’d share my recently finished project. It’s a word clock I built for my sisters birthday. So far everything’s running fine, now I need to spend some time on my other projects (with up to 128 LEDs so far).
Thanks for all the work on this great project
bye,
Daniel
Oh wow, that’s amazing! Do you have any “making of” photos? How did you get the “holes” (in the A, O, R etc) to stay put?
Thanks
The letters were cut into foil. I don’t know how to describe this in english… I’ve ordered the foils at a shop where they’re usually doing stickers for windows and commercials. I was thinking about getting this laser cut but then I would have had to redesign the letters so the holes don’t fall out like you’re saying. And the price would have been somewhat higher…
Just don’t take bright colors for the foil as the leds will shine through quite a bit even at medium gray. I’ve put a ldr into it to compensate for this.
I’m building a second one of these clocks currently, I’ll post some making of pictures these days.
Beautiful work!
Had a few pictures of the foil on my mobile:

Ah, I see, so there’s two layers, the opaque foil layer and a clear plastic layer, and you peel the letter shapes off the plastic?
That’s neat. What are the dimensions of the clock?
The clock is 42cm x 42cm (16.5"). I went for the “easy route” by designing everything based on the led strips available. I bought 30 leds/m strips so I started calculating character size and spacing based on 33.5mm.
So inside there’s 10 strips with 11 leds on each one.
@Robert_Atkins Exactly. Just a really big, big sticker.
nice work Daniel, also on your photography
@Roger_M Thanks
Actually photography was the reason to buy my first arduino a while back. Last year I’ve built a controller with 2 solenoid valves for drop photography :))
Ha! My next arduino-project has nothing to do with fastled. I need to build myself a rotating platform so I can shoot 360 degree-photographs. The “box” needs to take as little input as “how many stop in between” and then do a full turn. It should trigger my Canon (which triggers 4 flash heads itself) and step the platform around. A beep when done would be nice
Super cooles Projekt!

Looks really nice.
And maybe you try to explain it in german again.
How does this look at “ten o’clock”? The two words are right next to each other so are they color-coded, or how do they differentiate?
@Patrik_Nefuek
Hi Patrik,
[english]
He’s right with his assumption. When showing “Zehn Uhr” (ten o’ clock) and “Halb Fünf” (half past/to five) I’m using different colors to keep the words visually apart.
bye,
Daniel
