Hi all,
I have a 3D printer, and was wondering if it’s possible to let it serve as both a 3D printer, and a Laser engraver.
Anyone done this before?
Firmware considerations?
Hardware conversations?
Safety requirements?

@Panayiotis_Savva not problems at all. Safety would be either glasses for diode Laser and making sure nobody else is presence or enclosed the machine with a protection type acrylic. You need to get yourself a diode and it’s driver then have a board that will provide you pwm. I suggest you take a look at http://jtechphotonics.com website they have tons of examples on adding laser to printers, I have one of those just don’t use their crappie software solution
a diode laser is an easy mod, if your printer runs on a rambo board (or something similar). mine serves dual purpose.
I’m harder to convert than just applying peer pressure, peter. There’s a special version of marlin for laser cutting.
+Peter van der Walt, send like the team is actually working to support gcodes for both CNC and Laser.
