We do love open source software and we really wanted to do it in freecad , but onshape is so good , so free and so easy for newcomers to copy the design and change things that we decided to use it for this model ( and the updated smartrapcore standard).
I see better than you think ! I perfectly know onshape is all but open source. The point is : we tried very hard to have a good solution to share with freecad , but it doesn’t work… really not !
The standard smartrapcore is designed in openjscad, but no one van or want modify the source ( 1000 lines ) and ask us to do the mods . That we can’t do.
onshape has been for now ( i hope we can change to an open source solution ? ) the best shot to have newcomers, people without good knowledge of CAD programs , to be able to copy the model in source ( not STL! ) and change things in the model, or even make new accesories in an easy way.
Besides, they do really a good effort to make it free for public projects , free to use , etc…
So yes, in certain situations, I believe closed source programs CAN help open source projects to develop.
BQ redid the Ciclop in freecad lulzbot share their freecad designs and ive done all my printers and for that matter designs in freecad. It may be a tough learning curve but it so worth it.
Oh what I meant to say was. Nice printer it quite similar to how ive done my printers for more than a year. One comment on the frame you may need more corner braces.
@Smartfriendz_3d_prin
It doesn’t really matter to me what you do with your designs. If you don’t want to make the effort to go really public, fine. Your design, your choice. I never published my own designs either, because I’m just too lazy.
But don’t talk about open source because it sounds good, and do something that clearly isn’t open source yet. That’s all.
Well, I’m really not here to argue about that. It’s not really the right place If you look for the 3 years of smartfriendz history ( and the github and youmagine and thingiverse “smartrap”) , you will see I don’t need to defend myself about open source and that i’m not using this term because "it sounds good ".
Let’s say we publish our sources for this design in step format ( or parasolid, or in solidworks) on our github and , if you want to access to the all layers and sketches, you will need to use onshape and re-export to step files yourself ?
That should be ok for most of us i think.
thank you michael,
Trust me, we try to make it work in freecad , but we really want most people to be able to easily work and change options on the design and for now , I’m not really happy with freecad on that point. Most people trying to change the parts ended up with a no usable file ( broken stack).
We are following closely the progress ( they do a very good job of course ).
Talking hard to use software, I remember some of the 1st smart rap files where in blender. But at the end of the day I learnt in freecad so I cant imagine using something else if I had to learn a new cad program tomorrow I dont know what I would do. (probably not blender) but @Mark_Rehorst made a good point the sharing of IP is the common goal. and honestly I can just as easily take a stl and convert it to a mesh if I did want to make a change.
indeed, the Smartrap was all designed in blender ( i come from 3d animation so i knew blender very well).
I admit it , no one went in the sources to adapt a version ( well, maybe one or two persons ).
that kind of z motor system makes no sense at all: if you decrease microstepping (1/16) you reduce its holding torque. This design makes you choose layer height vs maximum printed volume. Google microstepping torque and you will see that it is true
@Rien_Stouten you’re too lazy to share your own design, yet you have the time to criticize others about their methods of sharing. Why don’t you look into what onshape is before you comment? In my humble opinion, onshape is on another level compared to freecad.
Again, the fact that onshape is closed source doesn’t stop the users from freely sharing the designs. We are talking about the designs, not the onshape software itself. Once you can wrap your head around that incredibly complex concept hopefully you’ll see the light. Until then, stick to the stoneage “opensource” freecad.
@Rien_Stouten the z motor in this building is holding all the weight, also it moves not too often. I think the most important factor in what she says in this case is the decreasing holding torque, because that motor is holding, if you take it away, the bed will fall
@Rien_Stouten no new participants ? are you sure ? that would be a problem in that case.
but i just created a new account, all seems ok for me ?
I will have a look more closely , just in case. thx.
@Smartfriendz_3d_prin great. Every time you upgrade this printer I like it more and more. The OnShape link you have above takes me to the previous model. Is the “Alu” version not up yet and will be released soon?
Keep the awesomeness coming.
@Smartfriendz_3d_prin You just created a new account? How is that possible?
I tried to join in march this year, and I got this message: Hi ,
Thanks for your interest in Onshape.
Unfortunately, due to overwhelming demand, our
early access program is currently full.
Don’t worry, we’ll keep your information on file and we’ll
reach out to you as soon as spots become available.
Since then I got weekly mails from Onscape, telling me how great it is. I tried it again this morning, and got the same reply from them.
