Hi everyone. I am looking at building an OX.

Hi everyone. I am looking at building an OX. I have done quite a bit of research so now I am going to ask the questions I haven’t found answers to.

  1. In the picture is a 3/4 inch think plywood round. I make these for my sister who uses them to make quilted footstools. Now what I would like to do is drop a 4 ft square piece of plywood on the OX and walk away (figuratively) and have it spit out 4 of these at a time. Now if this would take a long time to do I would be good with just setting it up centered to drop a cut round into clamps and have it drill the holes for me. (I can cut a round in 5 minutes on a custom jig I built for my table saw) the holes take me much longer to drill. These rounds are 17 inches across. So would it be worth doing a 4x4 foot bed?

OK the shorter questions
2. Is this machine fast enough for a laser? I have a LCheapo laser for my 3d printer and would like a bigger bed to play with it on.

  1. Am I better off just buying the pieces myself? Or is a kit the better option? I am pretty handy. I have assembled a few 3d printers so I am familiar with xyz axis and the like.

You need to keep in mind that in order to have a cutting area of 48" x 48" you’ll need a 54" x 58" (approx) sized OX (1500 x 1500 would be 59" square which would cover a 48" square piece of plywood.

Also, I think you could get 6 circles that are 17" diameter out of of a 48" square piece of plywood.

I build speakers and do basically the same thing. I would cut them with a router and circle cutting jig like the Jasper Jig Model 200. You can also make your own jig with scraps. You should absolutely build an OX, but not for this project.

@Jim_Fancher thanks I kind of had a feeling I am better off cutting the rounds with my table saw (router circle jig takes too long considering I need the round as opposed to you needing the empty circle) cutting the round literally take me 5 min or less. I cut the one in the photo. It’s the holes throughout that suck. I absolutely want to build an OX. I have other things I would do with it. Hence the question about the laser as well.

@dhylands thanks for the heads up. I think I will forget cutting the circles. Still would like to get one lined up for just drilling the holes in the circles. So for maximum build table with pretty much off the shelf parts I am thinking of increasing the Y axis to 1500 from 750. Seems like it keeps things easy to order and gives me plenty of workspace with a roughly 52" x50" work area.
