Hi everyone, I'm having a bit of coding block.

Hi everyone,

I’m having a bit of coding block. I’ve been trying to get an aurora borealis lighting effect going. But all I can get is the lighting to fade/pulse randomly along the entire strip.

I’d love to give a wave or moving bright and dim spots. But everything I’ve tried just ends up going to black at some point.

I can post code, but beware it is a disaster. I’ve tried so many ideas I’ve kinda lost the grace of it.

with a brightness mapping of sorts

with the noise example mashed in

Has any one run into making an organic lighting, other than the fire example? I don’t like the flickering and such of fire. I feel like the aurora is a lot smoother.

Without looking at your code: Try the nscale and blur functions to fade stuff slowly out.
I tryed a lot to make animations appear organic. Check my approaches out here:

Links to the most of the relevant code snippets you find somewhere inbetween my G+ postings. Maybe you get some inspiration there.
(With a 1d setup it’s basically all the same - think of it like just rendering one row of a matrix.)

I looks like you are doing a similar thing to me, I have a load of strips installed in my kitchen. My aim is also to have some gentle waves pulsing and moving around.
For what it’s worth here is my code (if you thought yours was untidy, wait till you see mine)

It’s pretty basic at the moment, I’m hoping to add some different colour schemes and modes, and the ability to have the strips running a bit more independently. Instead of all being mirrored.
