Hi folks! Does anyone here know if it is possible to assemble homemade JST connectors? I will be making a project that require a significant amount of wiring and would like to move towards solderless assembly. Is it possible to somehow assemble JST plugs with a crimper? Any help on this would be great…

Yes, you can get JST housings and pins from Digikey. And I’ve used these crimpers from Sparkfun: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10219

I’ve been considering one of these sets - http://www.hansenhobbies.com/products/connectors/connectorkits/ck_drcck2/ - to mak emaking my own cables and connectors a bit easier.

it’s interesting that the JST SM datasheet shows the connectors are suitable for 22-28 AWG

https://solarbotics.com/download.php?file=1742

whereas there are versions with 20 AWG wire,

I am wondering if the same housing can accommodate 20AWG?

JST connectors come in different sizes for different wire gauges. You need to get the correct connector for the wire you’re using and a matching crimper. Getting the wrong sized crimper will either damage the connector/wire or not work at all.

I been using jst connectors they have been working well. You can buy a pack of 10-20 pairs for cheap on ebay.

My advice would be “don’t” and buy pre-crimped connector sets. It will take an age to do by hand and the factory-made ones will be more reliable.
