Hi folks, I was wondering...

Hi folks, I was wondering… I slowly started to research how expensive would it be to get water cooled hotend (and motors eventually), main reason were:

  • reduce air flow in my heated box
  • I have to use stronger fan to work properly (e3d v5 hotend) …
  • make it a little bit less noiser
  • water cooling should be more effective and actually smaller (I can replace big radiator on e3d with something smaller)
  • I should be able to afford high temp materials
  • everything I listed doubles with dual hot ends…

but I found that initial investment would have to be quite high because I can’t find any old radiators (you have to cool the liquid somehow) or any water pumps I could use… (But I should be able to easily modify e3d to be watercooled)… and I am not sure it will be worth it…

also… I was thinking… is it safe to use water to cool something that got 250C ? I mean… if pump would stop to work… the water near the nozzle would eventually go over 100C and that is something I consider dangerous …

so… do you have any eperience? or what is your input?

If you want a water cooled hot end, look into E3D’s kraken. That way you at least don’t have to modify the hot end.

With the kraken, just passive cooling from a reasonable sized reservoir (about half a gallon) is sufficient. The same may be true of the system with motors added in, as they don’t give off all that much thermal energy.

Well, making the water cooled hot end is easiest part of the problem  and I can homemade it on lathe… so kind of waste of money for me

also, kraken is design where each print head have to be perfectly leveled … while I want to use something that allows me to lift the head that is not printing…

something like this… http://wiki.veverak.org/dual.png

But thanks about that hint with passive cooling!

I build a water cooled hoted for the e3d v5, it worked fine. Now I use a different hotend but I will use to the water cooling with my next printer again. I used old pc components, stock price is about 150€.

I recently posted my watercooled setup here. Look it up.

@Rien_Stouten awesome ! don’t you have more photos somewhere?

Not at the moment, no.
This was just a temporary setup. On my desk I have some parts for a new hotend cooler. Look on ebay for a cooling jacket. These are used by RC boat addicts to cool their motors.

Yeah, I allready found those and that is my plan how to made hotend cooler  … well, thanks for input!
