Hi Folks!  I'm looking at building a thing,

Hi Folks! I’m looking at building a thing, that will have about 7 meters of the 12v ws2811 stuff. (210 leds, 70 addresses). It’s made of up smaller lengths.

Is that too long to run off a single data line? I’m hoping to run the power in parallel, and the data in serial.

Is there a recommended limit on the number of addresses in a single string?

It really depends on the frame rate that you want. At 800kbps, it is 30µs per rgb led write. If you do 70 pixels of writing, that’s 2.1ms per “frame” - or 476fps if you do nothing but push pixel data, more realistically, I suspect you want to do things other than just push pixels, so you’re still looking at a good 238fps at 50% cpu time, so I think a single line will be fine.

Power, as you noted, will certainly be a larger problem. I have found that I need to inject power every 5m or so with the 12v, 30 leds/m strips - you can’t hurt things by injecting more often than that.

Wonderful. I don’t need a really high frame rate here, so that should be fine.

thanks!
