Hi guys.. just got my first 3dprinter(buccaneer -prints PLA only) over the weekend.

Hi guys… just got my first 3dprinter(buccaneer -prints PLA only) over the weekend. Anyone can suggest an easy to use & cheap (free would be better) 3d software that can generate support also as well as export to stl?

The software included in the printer is so basic. Load file , resize /rotate then print.

Thanks for the help

Use CURA to generate the stl files and then repetier or pronterface to print

#Cura does the entire job.

We use Cura to resize, rotate, apply supports or turn on brims/rafts, and so on. Then we use it to generate the gcode that Repetier will load.

Repetier included Slic3r for gcode-generation, and it does have some tools Cura doesn’t (and vice versa , but either way, we then use Repetier to print via USB cable to our Bukito (RepRap mechanism) printer.

If we save the gcode file to a microSD chip, and rename it “auto0.g”, and insert it into the board, the Bukito will print the file without any computer connection, as soon as we turn it on - in that case we’re using only Cura as +Kurt Meister says above.

I don’t believe buccaneer has support for external memory.

Do you mean to g-code or to .STL? If you just need a slicer i suggest cura. I if you need something to create custom items to print i say learn sketchup and blender. Lots of videos to learn both with.

@D_Rob - I have created custom STL with SketchUp and played somewhat with openscad. Both are available in free versions. They also both have fairly steep learning curves. Cura will not export to STL, but it will load STL files. SketchUp has an add-in that lets you export to STL, and it works very well.

@Fritz_Dimasapit , we have had great success using only free software. Hit the forums for other model 3D printers for suggestions about how to do what you need to do - I have found solutions in Makerbot and PrintrBot forums that solved problems with software.

autodesk meshmixer!! free and the best support and tools ever!

@D_Rob … create a 3d model and save/export it to stl… currently my only way to print through my printer is by opening an stl file using its ap

@Pat_Cummings and @enhydra@Michael_Scholtz … thanks guys i’ll check CURA then. Btw Pat, you are right about the support of buccaneer. It only accepts STLs thru its app. (Chrome/android/ios/windows/mac) currently only their android app works for me. There are some issue for their other apps on my pc.

Try blender. Lot of tutorials on you tube

Sounds like the slicer is built-in for buccaneer, like it is making its own toolpath commands (gcode) from the STL input app. Is that right, @Fritz_Dimasapit ? If that’s the case, then only STL-generating software will do you any good.

Repetier does have cura engine built in now and it works well. Cura as a standalone install is great for beginners as you can easily move resize set layer hight etc. It does print directly but I find its a little crude in that aspect so I prefer exporting gcode and then printing with repetier or pronterface. I use one on the one printer and the other on my other printer. Each has their strengths repetier is a little more advanced but also a little buggy at times. Each of them actually does all of what you need but the advantage of how we all work allows us to use the optimal software for each task.

@Pat_Cummings yup it has built in slicer( as confirmed with their dev). My only issue is when i tried to enable their support generator it sometimes generate support to parts that will be ok without support. I have no experience on using any cad programs that is why i just looking for basic software. For the meantime i think i’ll be happy printing stuff from online and maybe add some name/letter printing.
Thanks for all the advice guys.

In cura generates the support material as you configure it. To see it change to layer view.
