Hi guys, we’ve made a cool video about Thingiverse integrating the 3D Hubs “Get this Printed” button. Hope you like it!

Do I understand this correctly – MakerbotThingiverse makes money off this partnership, 3D Hubs makes money, the printer makes money, but the original designer of the model makes money only if the buyer (optionally) decides to “tip” him/her?

It makes sense to me and liability.

@kongorilla not really. It’s an opt-in feature to begin with, so the designer is always in control whether he/she wants to make use of the new feature.

If so, indeed the “tip” system is currently how it works. The reason to do so is that many Thingiverse designs are ‘open’ and therefore we thought a ‘tip’ system, which is a bit ‘softer’, is the most fair solution. Based on feedback we will keep on tweaking the feature.

Hope that clarifies!

My point is, everyone is guaranteed a “cut” except the designer, who is at the whim of the buyer. I don’t understand why designers are treated as a lesser class in the transaction.

Sorry, I’m not explaining well. A designer can also set a “fixed tip” so is not at the whim of the buyer

So, if a designer sets a “fixed tip” the buyer must pay it? The Thingiverse press release calls them “suggested amounts,” which implies they’re always optional.

Yes, for the first designer batch currently I’m not 100% sure what was agreed with the designers though. That I need to check
