Hi! I now have a strange problem with one of the stepper drivers on my RAMPS board. After a while it’ seems to go into thermal shutdown (heatsink is mounted and a fan is cooling the RAMPS), but it will never come back. I have to reset the whole board, and then, after sending a move command, it will first just stutter again for a second or two, but then it starts to work again. Even powering off the motors in repetier host and waiting ten minutes does not help. I already replaced the Stepper driver board, but the effect still exists. I just ordered DRV8825 boards to replace the A4998, maybe that will fix it, but it’s a quite strange problem. Anyone seen this?
Have you checked the driver voltage?
You mean V-REF? No, that’s my plan for tomorrow. The strange thing is, that I have the same type of stepper motors running on my other printer with another RAMPS without a problem. If I touch the heatsinks with my finger, they’re ice cold.
Those A4998 drivers have a small adjustable window. Is the affected stepper getting hot?
No, even the steppers are cold. Could it be my powersupply? It, s a really cheap 150W
I suppose it’s possible. Is the arduino resetting or is it just the one stepper?
Its just one stepper, the Rest still works normal
Tomorrow i’ll switch the complete arduino+ramps from my other printer and just see if it will make a difference
Then it probably isn’t the power supply. I would probably just swap out the Ramps board first. I also have some spare drivers for troubleshooting too. Worth the investment.
While you have it apart, check all of the power connections. I have heard of some of those going bad on the cheap Chinese knockoffs.
Odd. Maybe there is a small short that js generating current but still allows it to run till it gets too hot and seizes up? Have you turned up the current on it?
Floating enable line on the socket for the driver?
