Hi, I’ve been having a really weird issue where the layers shift, but only for a few layers. After those, it seems to shift back. I have pics of a few of the points that this happened on a recent print.

increase motor current . chek your ref voltage with a multimeter to get the current right on the stepper drivers. also check if the bearing are binding.

My motors aren’t skipping, I checked for that. The bearings are good too.

@Sahil_Jain how can u be sure… this is skipped motor but very minor to be noticed. Have you tuned your stepper drivers properly ?

What printer? Style? Cartesian? Missing some details here to really get a solid picture of what’s going on.

Check if the section is printed “the other way around”, as in the printer moving clockwise vs. counterclockwise. Might just be mechanical backlash.

Check the straightness of the rods

On mine, it took a long time to find it, but it was the hotend base that was loosen from the extruder.
Depending on the side it started the layer, it would dislocate the perimeter on a different direction.

@ThantiK it is a custom CoreXY build. @Thomas_Sanladerer I’ll print again and check for that.

I have also seen weird stuff like that from a heated bed that flexes as it heats and contracts during the off cycle.

Try looking at your gcode preview before messing with settings…

Mine did this when the homing sensor was zip tied next to the motor wire. Apparently some sort of interference.

@Dag_Elias_Sordal I have definitely seen that before but I think in that case the print shifted a little in one direction each time it falsed. in his photo it looks like it stay somewhat aligned.

I got very similar artifacts when my hot end was slightly loose in the extruder mount and could wobble around a little.

Looseness in the mounting of the extruder or the platform is a strong possibility. I’ve also seen this type of thing from tension building up in the spool or the wiring as the machine moves. Spool tension issues are unlikely if you’re using a bowden, but still possible if it’s enough to make the frame flex (which would look like this, rather than the usual under- and over-compressed layers). If your wiring to the platform or extruder is stiff or gets into awkward positions as the Z axis moves, it can also cause this.

@Thomas_Sanladerer You were right. I noticed the layer was being printed in the opposite direction, and this causes the layer shift. What can I do to correct this? My motion system is rigid and tight. My hotend is secure, but the heater block of my V6 and consequently the nozzle seem to have some play even though I tightened it thoroughly.

@Sahil_Jain lowering jerk values may help, it’ll use an acceleration curve deeper into the deceleration
