Hi people need help here with retraction.

Hi people need help here with retraction. It’s doing this rough noise when retracting at 70mm/s length 6mm

When it’s printing it is quiet only when retracting… I wanted to try 100mm/s retract speed to eliminate stringing but can’t bear the sound it made at 70… Any suggestion? Thx

I was having some retraction problems with wood pla at 100mm/s for 4 mm. Grinding away filament changing the thickness of it as it went through the the hot end, and a band grinding/honking noise. I dropped retraction settings to 3 mm @ 50mm/s and my horrible sounds went away, no stringy problems. What are you printing with?

Hatchbox wood pla. Currently it’s stringing like crazy at 200°c

Try printing a little cooler like 190 and slow that retraction down. I had problems with wood PLA as well. the recommended retraction settings I was seeing online for wood pla were VERY reserved. i was seeing things like 2.5 to 3 mm at 20-30 mm/s.

I see great results with Hatchbox PLA at 192. Video wont play for me, so cant comment on that part :frowning:

@Step_Cia I retract 5mm at 45mm/s. I have almost no stringing anywhere, but I have not used a wood fill before. Do you have the same issue when printing in regular PLA?

yes regular PLA also shows stringing. I’m going to try lowering my temp from 200 to 190…

Yeah, that should help a lot. Like I said previously, try 192. It seems the be my sweet spot for minimal stringing while still having good layer adhesion.

Build a temperature tower and find your filament and printer’s sweet spot.

hmm did various speed test and found that 35mm/s retract is the fastest retract speed without making that noise… upping current and acceleration didn’t seem to help

sounds similar to what I experience with my wood pla and from what i was able to drag up online. Im thinking the wood pla is just softer and too much acceleration on the retract is grinding the soft filament instead of bringing it back. How is your stringy ooze problem?

Changed to regular PLA and sound still there and stringing still there as well. Will try to disassemble the titan and redo

ok. did some more test. this time I stripped out the Titan and just left with the E motor clamped. it turns out the TMC2100 in stealthChop mode can’t handle retraction speed faster than 35mm/s so I disable stealthChop (yeah it is now whining…) but I was able to retract at 70mm/s now. Could be more… I did not want to push it more.
