Hi! What is the best option for scanning smaller 3D-objects right now?

Hi! What is the best option for scanning smaller 3D-objects right now? Still the Makerbot scanner? I have tried scanning with Skanect and 123DCatch but have not had much success.

Honestly, a bit interested in 3D scanning myself as well; need to get the tail lights of my car scanned so I can do some modifications.

I am done with scanners because Google Tango is going to come . But still you can try with Kinect and Fabscan DIY kit or David laser scanner

Tango is designed to scan environments, I doubt it will be able to scan small items with any accuracy.

I was more looking for a commercial solution that is available today. I do have a Structure IO sensor on order but it is never delivered (Kickstarter…).

But is the Makerbot scanner good or not?

Now that PrimeSense was shutdown there really isn’t anything on the market that can do close-up scanning on the cheap. I’m trying to get my Kinect 2.0 dev kit going with scanning, but the SDK is not there yet.

Ping @Daniel_Noree , care to comment on the scanner?

From what I’ve seen, the makerbot scanner is crap. All the desktop/hobby scanners are way behind on their ship dates. And the pro ones are $20k and above.

Mmmm yeah. I have spent the last 30 minutes downloading scans made with the Makerbot and I am not impressed

@Peter_Parnes Well, to be honest even though i have had the Digitizer for a while now i have really only done 1 scan http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:230368
I think the Digitizer will perform ok with the “right objects” such as gnomes or cat´s
No just kidding. It´s ok and the multiscan worked better than expected. But i think for what you get it´s much too expensive, it´s just not worth it. I´ve tried some difficult scans and i ended up throwing them all away.
My best friend is still my caliper! =)

Btw, i also have a Primesense w Skanect and i use it all the time, great fun!

Thanks @Daniel_Noree .

Are you scanning small object with Skanect? I have only had luck with scanning larger things like people.

@Peter_Parnes No, only people. I´ll just wait for a proper scanner.
Is the scanning for a particular project? I can give it a go on the Digitizer if you want!

It was actually two different. My son wanted to try to copy Gogos send a friend wanted me to copy a metal thing for an art project.

Hmm, they seem quite shiny?
I did actually scan a “Pet Shop” for my daughter whih came out ok and it looks like it could be the same size.

The thing with the makerbot (and other similar turntable scanners) is they are really scanning “lots of 2D data” and re-assembling it as 3D…

A great example is if you have a mug. It will be scanned as a solid cylinder with a handle, because the scanner cannot see that it is hollow (although it can see that the handle has a ‘hand hole’ because that is visible to it)

You couldn’t scan a gear with a hole in it…

You probably wouldn’t get good results on “bart simpsons hair”

You would have a hard time scanning a mobile phone case that “wraps around the front” a little, because the ‘lip’ that wraps around the front would be very difficult to catch.

They’re a step in the right direction, but each time I think “Hey - it would be great to have a scanner for…” It’s an object like a taillight, or something else where it will not fit on the scanner / has features that the scanner would not capture…

Matterform is supposed to be shipping soon. They are about 4 month behind, but they do have a limited closed beta currently and supposed to be up and running by end of April I think

By the way, here is my first test: https://plus.google.com/104199731463622588564/posts/MVRtYAxucnX
