How have you been making gears?

How have you been making gears? I tried and failed many many times to model a gear from scratch in solidworks. Then I found this

I didn’t design it, but I thought it might be of interest to this group, given the recent comment discussion on gears.

Thanks for sharing!

All the time I spend on thingiverse, I though I would have noticed that thing before now. Its been up there for at least 2 years. Oh well. I know about it now. Though it would be better to get the word out because the gears it makes mesh wonderfully.

Excellent. I’m interested in the theory behind gear design, is this THE shape? Are there design choices that can be made within this shape or others? Would love to find some reading materiel.

I haven’t, but the design table allows you to specify gear engagement angle and other things. I only ever altered number of teeth and scale factor.

Have you tried the inbuilt toolbox with SW’s for configurable gears?

didnt even know that existed

@Chapman_Baetzel if you look on YouTube there are quite a few good guides to watch

Geartrax for Solidworks would be nice to have. I tried the demo but it is way too expensive for me to buy.
There are many standard (and parametric) gears also available at http://solidcomponents.com

I have a few text books all about gear design. There is literally books worth of information on gear design, shape, angle and application. Lucky for most of us, lots of people narrowed it down to a few standardized options.

Here is a decent resource to for some details:
