Howdy, I'm a finalist in the Education category of the FormLabs 3D Design Awards

Howdy,

I’m a finalist in the Education category of the FormLabs 3D Design Awards for my Hidden Figures - Friendship 7 model. I could use your vote and help spreading the word.

The models shows the portraits of NASA mathematicians Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson in bas relief on the Friendship 7 capsule. The story of these African-American women’s pivotal role in the first orbit of the Earth by an American is told in the book and movie Hidden Figures.

The model is easily recognizable as a space capsule but only when it is lit from inside do these ‘hidden figures’ fully reveal themselves. This model symbolizes the invisible but vital contribution African-American women made to the early space program.

I’ve been working on increasing the diversity of models in 3D printing repositories by encouraging students and teachers to look for 0 Things. Finding areas where there are no models and then designing and publishing models to fill the void. These could be in the content area but can also center around identity, heritage and culture. Hispanic Heritage, Black History and Women’s history are areas I’ve explored on my blog.

Thanks for your help and have a great weekend.

Neat. Is this done with velocity painting or thickening the walls?

Looks like a lithophane to me

It is a litophane indeed! Excellent!

Here is an outline of the process https://ultimaker.com/en/blog/37220-3d-model-hidden-figures-on-friendship-7

Great model. I hope you win and I’m looking forward to printing one of them. Fantastic movie as well, highly recommend.
