I am attempting to build my own extruder / hot end. When I push (by hand) the filament (pla) into the hot end (once it is hot), it flows smoothly. However, if I pull back (simulate a retract), I cannot push it in any more until I pull it all out, cut what appears to be a plug shape knob off and start over.

How much filament is p pulled back on a typical retract (3mm into a 0.04" nozzle)?

What type of hotend are you building? Pics? Metal or PTFE lined? There’s a big difference in terms of troubleshooting.
