I am looking for a 3D printer like the XYZprinting daVinci 1.0 but does take the stupid cartridges. I like the size and price of the daVinci and $499 and the 7.8" x 7.8" x 7.8" build size. Just not the cartridges. Any Recommendations?
The only reason they sell something that large for that price is because they subsidize the lower machine price with the overpriced cartridges.
You’re not going to find anything that cheap unless it’s a kit.
http://www.makerfarm.com/index.php/3d-printer-kits/prusa-8-i3v-kit-v-slot-extrusion.html might be an option for you if $500 is your absolute limit.
Last I checked there are hacks out there for the davinci to use any filament, but please verify this for the model you are asking about.
You could make a RepRap yourself for $500, and upgrade it over time. But if you’re in the market for your first printer, building from scratch may not be the best option. I did that and learned a lot, but it took time.
Check out some of the reprap kits with a 200mm x 200mm (8x8) bed. Avoid those with an acrylic frame.
This is my first 3D printer buy for my personnel use. I really have no idea what to get.
@Koen_Zaiser_Camokoko how mechanically inclined are you? Can you put together an ikea kit with badly worded chinese instructions without messing up?
How willing to learn are you? And how much free time to you have to waste? Is this going to be a hobby for you, or just a passing interest? Are 3D printers the interest, or the output of 3D printers?
I am pretty good at putting things together I have built models my Intire life. And I have exams for school coming up before Summer Break
@ThantiK I am looking in to printing my own models
The MakerFarm kit wouldn’t be the ideal option for you, but you’re kind of out-of-parameter as far as your price range goes for build volume. The i3 variants are probably the easiest printer to build, so you’d have that going for you – and I believe the electronics are pre-programmed.
I don’t like them because they’ve given the community some problems with regards to their design files, but that’s the best fit I can think of off the top of my head.
Ok Thanks.
I found this printer that I like. Is it any good?
Haha there’s those poorly worded Chinese instructions +ThantiK was talking about, right in the images and description.
The frame is acrylic. That’s a red flag. Acrylic used in structural applications, specifically printers, has been known to crack.
lol, Ok thx for the Heads Up
I still can’t find a printer I like for $500 or less.

@Koen_Zaiser_Camokoko , I mentioned that you were out of parameter with what you were wanting. $600-700 is a good starting price for a 3D printer worth owning. Any less than that and you begin to sacrifice your own time and additional money in order to get a quality print.
Additionally, you can go down in build volume and go with something like a printrbot (which is pretty high quality) that will fit close to your range.
Are there any kits that could possibly lower that price range besides the MakerFarm kit?
@Koen_Zaiser_Camokoko I highly suggest waiting a bit longer to get a slighter better printer. I wanted one for years (well, since 2006 when the Reprap Darwin came out) before getting my first one for around $750 USD a couple of years ago. Sometimes, it’s well worth the wait. Plus, it gives you a lot longer to figure out exactly which one you want.
OK, maybe on Christmas I will see what is available and I may have a bit more money.
@Nathan_Walkner I see at least one big flaw with that printer already. Hanging motor rods + flex couplers do not properly constrain the Z axis
There’s this, early reports seem promising:
Actually Looks pretty nice! @ThantiK What do you say?
