Move away from the AVRs and embrace Smoothie. Roy has the X5 in stock!
@Eclsnowman This what i used.
I am still tying to get you a picture but that bot is not here at this time.
@Wayne_Friedt thanks.
I have used Gadgets3d ramps 1.4 with no complaints. Super fast shipping. I cannot speak to customer service as I have never had a need to ask anything pertaining to the equipment. I’m a little lazy though and like sourcing everything from one spot.
Scratch just noted you want 24v system.
the ultimaker board v 1.5.7 is 19v but change the tantalum 100u capacitor to a 25v one and the lm7812 regulator to a switching one and its 24v ready. youll need a relay for heated bed and Id probably remove the switch ot replace it. it says it has a higher rating but I had to remove the plastic rockers to switch it back off.
I’ve been talking to Roy from Panucatt and the next gen of the azteeg is due to hit any day now.
I replaced the poly fuses on my RAMPS that were failing a couple nights ago and so far so good. I just got a 24v power supply and replacement fans and heaters so I should be running 24v in a few days.
@Joe_Spanier interesting. New azteeg huh.
Yup he was quiet on the changes. I talked him into back stock of the original because I needed a controller asap.
What issues did you have with the Viki? I was gonna order one.
@Joe_Spanier SD card slot on the viki seems to be shot. When I first connected it I got SD card light up led on the Viki when inserted, but was never readable. Now no light at all.
I really like the Rambo boards. They just work. I would really like to try some of the boards out there that use arm processors but it seems like the firmwares still need a lot of development.
@James_Zatopa Rambo is a beautiful board. And Johnny was great out at MRRF. The only thing holding me back from Rambo is no 1/32 microstep and the price is higher. I agree arm boards seem under documented currently. For example on smoothieboard it says it can be run via Ethernet/webpage… But I have never seen a screenshot. Also I have never seen a view of what smoothie looks like on the graphical LCD, and what functions are controllable via the LCD. I am torn still. But leaning towards a rumba and converting for 24v operation then adding a pi for octoprint. Man do I love octoprint.
Honestly the biggest thing that is going to affect is sound and @24V a lot of noise goes away because the switching frequency of the steppers is moved out of the audible range. I have also been rather abusive to the boards and they keep on ticking. AFAIK they LCD for the smoothie hasn’t been officially released yet. I really want to try a smoothie but I don’t have the skill to program, once they have the firmware a bit more developed that is going to be something I try. I don’t know if you met Charles at the MRRF but he is working on a beaglebone 3d printing solution that runs linuxCNC. It sounds like a great idea but he has quite a way to go before it is ready.
The machinekit solution that Charles is working in is great. I use linuxcnc for all my other machines so I’m really excited for that to get finished. I have the Probotix.com version of the breakout board that I have been playing with.
Here is a new option you might want to look at. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bam-dice-the-new-open-standard-for-arduino-based-3d-printers-and-more#home
@James_Zatopa looks great. I think I might go with the new azteeg (not yet announced). Should be up in a few weeks. I don’t yet know details… But I love my x3 so I am waiting to see the specs.
Hi, just wanted to comment on the Smoothieboard. There is no need to program to use Smoothie as is. I’m running a smoothieboard from the kickstarter, and i love it. Ethernet jack is on the way, so haven’t tried the web interface. I previously used Ramps with stepsticks, would not recommend that to anyone. Maybe the drv’s make a big diference, but i feel Ramps overall is not a very neat solution. Lousy cable management, dodgy connectors, few possibilities for expansion, plus that it feels like an evolutionary dead end when it comes to processing power.
