I bought that PLA over half year ago and from first days after opening

I bought that PLA over half year ago and from first days after opening it was breaking, it wasn’t issue until spool get to 30% and diameter lowered enough. Now I get it breaking in hand when trying to reach it from spool to extruder or in bowden tube.

Why would it happen, I keep humidity around 18% in room where printers ale located.

Any other thoughts other then not buy from same supplier?
I would mention only that I bought 3 spools, 2 were opened and had that issue.

Definitely wouldn’t use that supplier anymore…

How has it been stored?

It was stored in room of 20-22C with 16-18% of humidity. After opening from plastic bag, it was laying on shelf.

Will rising temperature help it or it is lost cause?
@Ryan_Vaughan Indeed that is Sainsmart filament.

Stick it in the oven at ~80 for a few hours and it might recover. Did the not ship it with a ziplock bag to store it in?

If it’s brittle it’s to dry. If anything 16-18% humidity is to low. Do a test and boil a clipping of your filament for 30-60 seconds and see if it’s still to brittle.

Most of the time the PLA/ABS drying is overstated. In my experience the only filament that really has moisture issues is Nylon.

thanks I will try that

keep us updated … want to know the outcome

I had some PLA going brittle only a couple of weeks ago, I’d left it out of the cake box as the spool was too big and I’d not got around to respooling it. I started a print only to find the filament on the floor. Picking it up it just fell apart into short lengths.

The oven trick has it working fine again, so not sure if too dry is always the cause.

When manufacturers harden steel they heat and cool it to get the molecules to realign. Could something be going on at a molecular level when it’s left in the open that’s fixed with a long reheat?

Know any filament manufacturers that might have a better insight into the issue @Thomas_Sanladerer ?

I have had the same issue and it is temperature related. The filament was fine until winter time. If I tried to move it while it was still cold, it would snap off, but if I warmed up the room for a while, I could print with no problems. If I didn’t pull it out of the extruder before going to bed, I would wake up to a broken filament.
