I can not figure out how I'm supposed to attach the Greg's Extruder body

I can not figure out how I’m supposed to attach the Greg’s Extruder body from the Prusa i3 repo to the i3 X Carriage. No matter if I try to attach it to the front or back, if I swap the bolt around (which doesn’t help much anyway because of the hob location). This looks like the way I’ve seen others attach it, but the nuts always hit.

I wonder if I don’t have an axis reversed on the printer that made the parts, but I feel like I’ve printed text successfully in the past.

That exstruder is for a horizontal x bar design. You probably need an extruder that is compatible with a vertical setup.

@Mano_Biletsky_Open_M , I did originally print an extruder (the Greg’s Wade Reloaded one) that was horizontal carriage only. This one, from the Prusa i3 repo, has mounting features for vertical carriages. The allen key in the photo is sort of mating the two pieces through one of these features. https://github.com/josefprusa/Prusa3/blob/master/box_frame/sample_stls/default_box_gt2_lm8uu/extras/gregs-wade-v3.stl

Ah I see… can’t help you out then. Sorry.

I made an adapter piece for my extruder to make the holes line up. It was for a different carriage type but may work or give inspiration for how to do something similar. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:64685

So the published design is poorly documented?

Thanks @Richard_Mitchell , I may have to go that route.

@Marcus_Wolschon , yes, that is certainly the case. I’ve been working on trying to get the BOM in order in the git repo, and then the assembly instructions are next. I do have to figure it out once in order to find out what’s wrong with the manual that exists. https://github.com/josefprusa/Prusa3/blob/master/box_frame/doc/manual.txt

@John_Ridley , I saw an i3 you built appears to have a Greg’s extruder. Any thoughts?

All right, a spacer it shall be! @Vaclav_Hula , I may send a pull request with some changes to box_frame/extras over the weekend as output of this.

EDIT: I know one of the problems will be with the length of the fastener. I think the M3x40 screws are only just long enough to catch the nuts in the carriage.

This is from current model? Then I botched something, it should include the spacer. I’ll look into it asap.

But if the gears are from the same source then the problem is somewhere else, my gears look quite different.

@Vaclav_Hula I had printed this probably 4 or 5 months ago. I had pulled the wades bits from elsewhere, so they may not even be compatible. Is the spacer included with the extruder body or the wades bits? That might explain why I don’t have it, having printed the gears separately from the repo version.

Slightly embarrassing if I just missed it and it was in the repo the whole time (even months ago)

There is no separate spacer, it is modification of the extruder body, it was fixed in August iirc. And I like the herringbone gears because they make the retract completely quiet on my machine, which is hard to do with straight gears.

I put bicycle grease on the gears, totally quiet

And no, we have involute gears for quite long, not just zigzag.

@Vaclav_Hula , I do see the spacer built in to the body now https://github.com/josefprusa/Prusa3/blob/master/box_frame/sample_stls/default_box_gt2_lm8uu/extras/gregs-wade-v3.stl

Mine must have been before that, so I will figure something out.

Thanks!

I’d say export both as stl, substract, print, glue.
