I designed and 3DPrinted this toy dump truck about 2 years ago.

I designed and 3DPrinted this toy dump truck about 2 years ago. Almost all parts are printed in ABS except for the wheels that are printed in PLA.
While the ABS parts still look fine the wheels (hard to see on these pictures) are now starting to delaminate in some places.
Will be interesting to see what they look like after another year… =)

Did you release the files? I have a nephew that might like that!

Which brands of filament did you use? Would it be different with other (better?) PLA brands? How would PETG compare to the PLA?

@Brook_Drumm Of course, i always do! Check the link above. =)

@Nelis_Willers the ABS is from MakerBot and the PLA was something I got from Mbot. PetaG or a co-polyester would probably be better.

Do you remember the temperature you used for the PLA? The color looks a bit “off” for the PLA prints that I have (I have 4 year old prints that seem to be doing fine) it might have been printed too cold?

Do “you” use the truck indoors or out in the wild, where uv and humidity stresses the material?

wow, i’m not even sure i can tell you what this model means to me.
this was actually one of the first things i printed after i built my first printer (now used as my testing printer) more than a year and half ago (i think).
when i finished my build and calibrating with a bunch of cubes and balls, the first 2 things i printed were a toothbrush holder (oral b) for my wife (which turned out great), and this toy dump truck (with an additional attachment) for my son who had just started playing with cars then.

i had bought a roll of red/orange petg specifically for printing this. and since i basically knew nothing, it took many attempts and many a nights calibrating my slicer and learning how to properly align and tune my prints, and i’m never saying how much of that roll i spent trying to print this just right
so much of my first learning experiences in 3d printing came from printing this model (i know we each had our “first” - but this was mine), and when success was finally attained, my hunger to print more elaborate things and to learn how to design them grew.

when it was all said and done, i painted some of the parts with some child proof eco-paint (a really bad paint job and a really bad choice of paint - so i learned some more).
for about a month my kid would not play with any other car, he loved it that much. and to this day it’s one of his favorite toys/cars, e.g we take it to the beach with us all the time. petg proved to be a really good choice and it’s the material i use most to this day.

it’s been re-painted and re-painted (but the plastic itself is in pretty good condition) and will probably be re-printed some day, but whenever someone asks me what my first real print was - i show them the toothbrush holder and the toy dump truck.

so basically… thank you!
