I don't get it. After DOZENS of failed prints, it pulls off this.

I don’t get it. After DOZENS of failed prints, it pulls off this. I didn’t expect it to get as far as it did, otherwise I would have selected some infil. PLA at 230c (yes, 230) and 198% boost in speed.

Looks like a comb over.

Repraperserverance!

Are you sure your thermistor is reading right? When I’ve run PLA that hot, it’s just a pile of stringy blobs, the layers all melt together, leaving less appearance of layering

Nope! Using the Lore of the group I’ve tried 1, 5, 8 (didn’t exist in my firmware, cut and pasted code from another version) and settled back on 5…at 230, both PLA and ABS appear to extrude equally well, so there’s no freekin’ telling what I’m ACTUALLY seeing. It may be local disturbances in the force, or my house may sit on an ancient burialground.

wow, I know some colors require more heat than others, but damn.

I have one, but the laser and the sensor don’t quite align, and the sensor airspace is conical, so it’s kind of more art than science.

kinda like this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/non-contact-infrared-thermometer-with-laser-targeting-69465-8905.html

The fact that you can extruder ABS is a good indicator

Yeah, but when I dial it back to PLA temps, it doesn’t extrude happily. The filament doesn’t stick, it’s more like ‘throwing rope about’.

Makerbot & DeltaMaker PLA is best extruded at around 230C - something about the manufacturer of the stuff. Ultimachine extrudes much lower, 180C or so…

@ThantiK that is really good to know, odd that the maker ware defaults to 185 when PLA is selected

@Eric_Moy , that’s simply been my experience with the stuff. As with all filament, YMMV based on so many different factors.

did you happen to buy this PLA from Amazon if so I have used the same stuff. Do yourself a favor and buy some real PLA. You will spend a whole lot less time with failed prints and problems.

Nope, it was makerbot brand from Microcenter, but…they’re still getting their wits about them, there’s no telling how old the filament was, and there’s a curious number of ‘managers open box special’ filament under the glass counter.

BTW, I watched their makerbot (before the print failed)…it was set at 230c and laying down 0.02mm layers…honestly, I have NO IDEA how they can get the resolution they get.

Does it smell sweet when you use it? Kinda like corn syrup?

What happens when you turn the heat down to 180? Are you using a cooling fan?

I’ve never heard of PLA getting old but it can retain moisture. Dry filament is key to a good print. This is what I am getting with my PLA, printed @ 185c with a cooling fans - https://plus.google.com/104278544169510019874/posts . looking at your print I think you would be amazed how much better your print would be with different PLA.

Oh, I’m counting on it. This printer works SO WELL, for SO MANY things…it just isn’t keeping the Baker’s Piping bag full…that can be the bag, it can be the frosting…I’m hoping it’s the frosting.
