I got pissed off at thingiverse, so I made an alternative. All open-source and all that. I think it turned out pretty nicely. Let me know what you think.

I mean there are a few others out there, but for me to use it it really needs to be open source. I don’t want the whole thingiverse thing repeating itself.

Let me know if there’s any features you guys want. Of course basically no budget, so it will take time. But I definitely want feedback.

One of my biggest features would be support for github hooks, syncing to rhombik on a push.

@Alex_Davies In your About section, it should be “bought” not “baught”.

Good luck with this endeavour. It is something the Community needs.

Thanks. The about section really needs to be rewritten. But I fixed that part at least.

@Alex_Davies I hate to say it. But there are way too many opensource alternatives to thingiverse right not. The benefit of thingiverse is everything is in one place.

If you really want to help it may be worth while to find a way to contribute to

Here is the problem. Everyone knows thingiverse. having 100 alternative places to host your files is means 100 places we have to look. As a designer if you want your designs to be found, with 100 alternatives you end up posting it on thingiverse, and youmagine, and …) so it just means more work and less complete models. I do agree, we need to move away from thingiverse . but another new repo is not the answer.

How many of those you list are actually open source?

Just bld3r, I think. People seem to have gotten it into their heads there are a lot, but pretty much it’s just bld3r and I. I do wish bld3r had of open sourced when they first launched, I would probably have worked on that instead.

It’s not a hugely important thing, but I do think whatever ends up beating thingiverse needs to be open source. So it can act as a neutral ground, and so that the various manufacturers can feel comfortable supporting it.

I am not against anyone doing opensource work. I just want to make you aware of the state of the industry, the problem right now is the division of resources.

Not saying you were. Just pointing out the rather limited open source options. If there was a good open source alternative to thingiverse when I started developing, I would have contributed to that instead.

There still isn’t really. I mean I do like bld3r, but their code base is a mess and their UX isn’t great.

The big problem is that we aren’t standardizing on one alternative. And there’s an easy solution to that. Just standardize on mine ;p

Basically, you’re saying this. http://xkcd.com/927/

Alex, great job on the 3D viewer, did you use a 3rd party library? In any case, to my knowledge it’s the first one that’s touch sensitive and works on my Android tablet. Cool!

We’re using jsc3D, which is pretty much the most cross platform around.
