I have a question regarding the trapezoidal nuts on i3 style machines. I know Prusa uses plastic trapezoidal nuts on their printers but is there a difference to just using brass nuts? Would switching to brass nuts be an upgrade or a downgrade to the printer?
I have found that the brass ones run fine but it really comes down to the quality of the surface finish.
Is there a specific reason why you would want to swap them?
I just got a pack of 6 lol
Normally no difference! Maybe the brass ones have a little more jog and that is why the loss of quality. It is easyer to made the plastic ones to be more tight plus, they will absorb vibrations better. But they will wear quiker.
So the brass ones may be more prone to Z wobble?
It may in some cirumstances…
But I have such brass nuts and i for more than 3 years and i didn’ meet such wobble. Usual the z mobile part of the printer is enough heavy to keep the thread contact on the same part regardless the direction of movement. But, if the z axis accelerations are high enough (mainly @ tetractions) the thread can loose contact and wobbles will issue.
I see. Well ill keep these just in case i break the plastic ones lol
Do note, the brass nut outer flange (where the screw holes are) is slightly smaller compared to the POM nut the Prusa i3 (MK2 and MK3) uses. but otherwise not to different. Regarding backlash for the brass nut, you can get spring loaded anti backlash versions like attached image.
Yeah i just got the regular ones. Not the ones with springs
