I have been contacted to design and prototype this item for someone who then wants to mass produce this design. He would like to go to a large company to get these produced and would like to buy the files after prototyping. What do you all normally charge to hand over possession of the file? Still in the middle of prototyping but getting close to his final design

I usually have a contract with my customer that gives them the right to the files, and then i charge them by the hour on the development time.

Yep. I charge hourly. If/ when the client wants to wrap things up I’m glad to hand the files over once their last payment as cleared.

If the design idea is theirs and all I’m doing is the modeling and prototyping I charge hourly. If I’m working out the idea from scratch and they want rights to the file results when completed then there is an additional agreement to transfer the IP (intellectual property) to them.

How much normally you guys charge for printing / hr? I hope it differs from material to material. On an average how much will you charge?

80 to 120

$95 - $120 per hour for engineering and design is typical. Charge by weight for prints with a factor for nozzle size and layer height. $0.90 - $1.50 per gram for high resolution PLA prints.

The thing is with the website I’m on the typical charge for modeling is 25/hr. So of I don’t charge him he will be getting a steal. Also, should I just give him the .stl file or should I include the Autodesk file?

If he owns the IP then I’d give him both file formats.
